The Canary Islands Performing Arts pay tribute to Pedro García Cabrera in 'One day there will be an'

In turbulent times it is even more necessary to vindicate the activism, dialogue and commitment to culture and love of Pedro García Cabrera, a journalist and poet born in La Gomera, who belonged to the Generation of '27. The playwrights from the Canary Islands Quique and Yeray Bazo (QY Bazo), are the authors of the play Un día habrá una isla, a tribute to García Cabrera, directed by Juan José Afonso (Cuco) and produced by Cauproges. The cast is made up of Bárbara Espejo, Niria Ró, María Salazar, Norberto Trujillo and Jorge Yumar. The show will take place on March 4, at 8:30 p.m., at the Guimerá Theater. The work is a scenic poem that navigates through the poetic and vital universe of this poet, who published more than twenty books, and who built a universal hymn to hope and freedom. Tickets are already on sale, both on the Teatro Guimerá website and at the box office of this venue. The Autonomous Organism of Culture of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, through the Guimerá Theater, has co-produced this show, which has the collaboration of the Pedro García Cabrera Foundation, the CajaCanarias Foundation, the Silbo Gomero Cultural Association, Itahisa Darias Sánchez and the Escuela de Arte y Superior Design Fernando Estevez; and financing from the Vallehermoso City Council (La Gomera), the Island Council of Tenerife and the Government of the Canary Islands through the Canarian Institute for Cultural Development.

The defense of identity from the universal

Born in Vallehermoso, in 1905, Pedro García Cabrera was a hardworking man and defender of calm reflection and intellectual improvement, a defender of his identity from the universal, of overcoming hatred towards those who imprisoned him, on several occasions, for his ideas. socialists, and love towards others.

In his poetic work he went through multiple movements, from the avant-garde and the trans-vanguard, to surrealism and social poetry. He is one of the most important figures in 20th century Canarian literature and a writer whose lyrics are imprinted in the history of letters in Spanish.

Juan José Pérez Afonso, 'Cuco'

One of the most important and representative Canarian performing arts directors on the national scene, Juan José Pérez Afonso, better known as Cuco, directs this tribute to Pedro García Cabrera. Born in Tenerife, he began his forays into the performing arts in the 1970s, as part of the independent Canarian company Tibicena. In 1982, he co-founded the Sanborombon Teatro company.

Led by José Carlos Plaza and the Concha Velasco company, he settled in Madrid in 1988 and, since then, he has directed a multitude of national stage works, in addition to making theater direction compatible with the management and programming of the Príncipe Gran theaters.
