Music, culture and literature – what a lovely statement of intent for a place designed to bring people together. Eight years ago, we decided to establish the Canary Islands as a hub where connections could be forged, a waystation, or a tea room in which to share culture – the new culture that emerges from the syncretic world of globalisation as we move through the 21st century. And it turns out that the café tables, the sofas, the spaces for sharing have served us well; our audiences have let us know this over the years, and these Encounters at the M/A/L have now become an indispensable fixture in the islands’ cultural calendar.

We present ourselves to the world – we are talking about the Canary Islands – as an established tourist destination, but one that offers much more than a single attraction: for some time now, the islands have been a destination in their own right, far more welcoming and comprehensive than the one the social traditions of the 20th century had assigned to us. Culture is an exquisite calling card for the Archipelago. And these Encounters at the M/A/L offer a twofold invitation: they open their doors to emerging local talent whilst attracting and presenting selected national and international offerings each year.

Each edition of this festival offers an opportunity to discover new voices, sounds and perspectives that enrich the cultural landscape of the archipelago. Workshops, concerts, literary readings and open discussions make up a programme that champions diversity and innovation, whilst never losing sight of the identity that defines us. This spirit of exchange makes Encuentros en el M/A/L a space where creativity flows and is shared, creating unique experiences for audiences of all ages.

More than just a single event, Encuentros en el M/A/L is a statement of principles: culture as a driving force for cohesion and development, as a bridge between territories and generations, and as a tool for the sustainability and social development of communities. In a world moving towards interconnection, the Canary Islands stand as a cultural beacon in the middle of the Atlantic, offering not only landscapes and climate, but also thought, art and sensibility. Here, every encounter is an invitation to look beyond, to engage in dialogue and to build together the contemporary narrative that unites us.

The Festival is supported by the Government of the Canary Islands, through Promotur Turismo Islas Canarias and the Canary Islands Institute of Cultural Development, and in collaboration with the Teatro Leal, the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, Aguere Cultural, La Parte Baja, Gomera Lounge, and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication at the University of La Laguna (ULL).
