The 6th edition of the Festival Encuentros en el M/A/L (Música, culturA y Letras) kicks off with the world premiere of the film Ánimo Animal, a tribute to Luis Eduardo Aute by a large number of artists in 2018. In addition, spectators will be able to enjoy, after the screening, the presence of the director of the feature film, Gaizka Urresti and Miguel Aute. The screenings will take place this Friday, 12 January, at 19:30, at the Castillo de Mata Museum, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; and on Saturday 13, at 12 noon, at TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
The Festival's Film and Music series will also screen documentary films related to the artists Coque Malla, Kiko Veneno, Santiago Auserón, and Lauren Jordan and Las Malas Compañías. In addition, the programme is rounded off with meetings with experts, concerts and visual arts. This initiative will be held in Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Gomera. The sixth edition of Encuentros en el M/A/L (Música, culturA y Letras), produced by Cauproges, is an activity financed with European funds, through the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism which is part of the Next Generation EU Instrument; the Government of the Canary Islands, through its public companies PROMOTUR Turismo Islas Canarias and Instituto Canario de Desarrollo Cultural and the collaboration of the Vallehermoso Town Council, and TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes.
The Encuentros en el M/A/L Festival, which celebrates its first five years in 2024, is committed to equal access to cultural content and offers added value with a unique programme compared to what already exists in the archipelago. The initiative is complemented by a parallel programme consisting of film screenings and discussion sessions for professionals and the public. In this way, those attending the activities can deepen their understanding of music and cultural contexts, as well as explore subcultures related to these artistic expressions that are not always manifested in live performances.
Animal Encouragement
In 2018, a large group of artists paid tribute to singer-songwriter Luis Eduardo Aute, at the Wizink Center in Madrid. Massiel, Dani Martín, Rosa León, José Mercé, Víctor Manuel Ana Belén, Rozalén, Silvio Rodríguez, Pedro Guerra, Jorge Drexler, Luis Pastor or Joan Manuel Serrat, participated in this heartfelt recognition of Aute.
The screenwriter, director and film producer, Gaizka Urresti, who already signed the documentary about the famous singer-songwriter, entitled Auteretrato, in 2019, now presents the film of that 2018 tribute.
Jorge. A journey of Coque Malla’.
Written and directed by Cristina Martín Barcelona and María José Martín Barcelona, Jorge. Una travesía de Coque Malla, tells the story of the life and artistic career of this legendary musician, who, at the age of 16, signed a contract with a multinational to record an album with his band Los Ronaldos. In addition to that period, the film deals with the moment when the group disbanded and Coque Malla started from scratch, as a solo artist. The feature film will be screened on Friday 19 January at 19:30 at the Castillo de Mata Museum in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and on Saturday 20 January at 12 noon at TEA.Tenerife Espacio de las Artes in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Un día Lobo López' (One Day Lobo López)
Thirty years after the recording of Kiko Veneno's album Échate un cantecito, produced by Joe Dworniak with the collaboration of Santiago Auserón, the film Un día Lobo López analyses the vital, social and artistic circumstances surrounding the creation of this record. Kiko Veneno's sixth album was a revolution in his artistic career and marked a new path in Spanish pop. Both the artist and the film's director, Alejandro Salgado, will be present at the screenings, which will take place on 26 January at 19:30 in the Castillo de Mata Museum, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; and on 27 January at 12 noon in TEA.Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Rock and Roll and Las Malas Compañías’.
After three compact discs that make up the trilogy Las Malas Compañías, the musician Lauren Jordán has put the finishing touch to this project with the documentary Rock and Roll y Malas Compañías. This film offers a vision of the arrival of rock and roll in Spain and its evolution up to the present day, as well as the artistic career of Lauren Jordan and her project Las Malas Compañías. The screenings, which will also feature Lauren Jordan, will take place on 2 February, at 19:30, at the Castillo de Mata Museum in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; and on 3 February, at 12 noon, at TEA.Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Music journalism and cultural management
On 6 February, at 6 p.m., the CICCA Cultural Centre in La Palmas de Gran Canaria will host the conference Music journalism. New challenges and opportunities in the digital environment and Cultural management of large festivals. Challenges around sustainability. Experts in these fields will take part.
Eat to the Beat' concerts
The Eat to the Beat concert series will offer three shows at the Espacio Miller in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Carlos Tarque will open this initiative on 5 April, while The Next Movement will perform on 20 April and Electric Guitar Lands 2024 on 4 May. All concerts will start at 20:30.
Wooden sculpture
For its part, the island of La Gomera will be able to enjoy the plastic arts aspect of the Festival. During the month of March, the Plaza de la Dama, in the municipality of Vallehermoso, will house a wooden sculpture created and produced by the artist Luigi Stinga.
